“My brother picked me up and drove me straight to New Haven hospital,” she told us. “We were there in twenty minutes. The doctors couldn’t believe it. I was like a monster. My neck was out to here,” she said, holding her hand six inches away from her body, “and that’s where all these scars are from,” she added, referring to the rough, pink and white splotches all over her exposed skin.

Listening to her story, I was reminded both of the medical negligence encountered by people in our prisons, and the degree to which jails greatly contribute to and exacerbate the AIDS crisis, and also of the critical need satisfied by programs like the Leeway House. Sadly, it would be much more effective if we could appropriately prevent and treat the scourge of AIDS in prison. Yet I am so glad that this woman had a place like the Leeway House so that she can rehabilitate and get, in her words, to the “things I want to accomplish”.bil - bil info

It might be pitiful that the case of Paris Hilton has dominated the national media this week, overshadowing a few other events like the G8 summit and the defeat of the immigration bill in the Senate. But I actually do think it was the most interesting thing that happened this week. Consider the events leading up to the roller coaster in-and-out-and-back-to-jail week. She gets a DUI. She violates her probation. She’s sentenced to jail. Sentenced halved. Goes to jail, let out nearly immediately, then ordered back. This all brings up a few questions. First and what makes me most angry - who knew the LA County sheriff can just release whoever the heck he wants whenever he wants? What’s the point of the sentence then? It would appear at this point that the judge does have jurisdiction having ordered Hilton back to jail, but I’m irked that it’s even in question. Come to find out then, that this happens all the time in LA.

Yesterday marked the completion of Day 1 of our community service pre-orientation activity organized by 2nd year Yale Med students. My group (Group A) spent the day at a Habitat For Humanity Site. But my comments are around the evening’s dinner at Zaroka, particularly a talk by Dr. Bill Danworth. From Ivy’s website:
